Humans are naturally creatures of habit. Without habitual responses we would have to work out afresh what to do each time we were confronted with a situation. Whilst our good habits serve us well, our ‘bad’ habits can have unwanted consequences.

Unwanted behaviour can often develop as a perceived ‘solution’ to a different problem. For example, a shy person can look to overcome their shyness through alcohol. They find themselves drinking more and more frequently. The drinking was used to solve a problem, but then becomes a problem in itself. Or a person who has insufficient intimacy in their life may comfort eat as a poor substitute for the real love that is missing.
